Building Facade Made Of Burnt Wooden Boards

Charred Wood Cladding

What is façade cladding?

Charred wood cladding, created using the traditional shou sugi ban technique, gives any façade a refined, elegant look while offering long lasting protection against the elements.

But what exactly is this material?
Charred wood boards are wooden planks that have been surface burned using a traditional Japanese technique called shou sugi ban also known as yakisugi. This process involves charring the surface of the wood, cooling it, cleaning off, and then finishing it with oil. The result is a visually striking, durable material that can be used for cladding, fencing, decking, and interior design.

With its rich texture and deep tones, it adds unique character and blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape. Beyond its visual appeal, charred cladding enhances durability and helps protect the structure beneath making it as practical as it is striking.

Protect and enhance your facade with charred wood cladding

Wooden facade cladding is constantly exposed to harsh environmental conditions like UV radiation, rain, humidity, mold, and natural decay. Over time, these elements can lead to discoloration, cracking, erosion, and warping.

To protect against these effects, Atelier TwentyOne uses a proprietary Shou Sugi Ban charring process on its facade boards. This technique not only enhances the wood’s durability but also gives it a unique, refined appearance that stands the test of time.

The charred wood process allows us to enhance the colours of the wood or adapt it to different shades to make an impact. Like Pine, Spruce can be used outdoors and indoors for siding, fencing, cladding, interiors, and paneling. As it is a softwood to ensure that it remains intact over the decades, it will need to be treated with a protective oil and maintained.

Thermo Pine

A versatile variety of wood and a popular choice, Pine is a great material for everything from Shou Sugi Ban Pine cladding and fencing through to outdoor furniture.

For fencing, Atelier TwentyOne uses Thermo Pine – a thermally modified Pine, where the wood is treated by high temperature to increase its durability. This leads to decreased moisture absorption making it more stable and less likely to degrade in the elements.
